SMS Sender ID Australia: New Rules for Businesses

SMS Sender ID Australia: What Businesses Must Do Before 1 July 2026

SMS Sender ID Australia rules are changing from 1 July 2026. If your business sends appointment reminders, marketing campaigns, delivery notifications, customer updates or two-factor authentication (2FA) messages using a branded SMS Sender ID, you’ll need to register it through the new Australian SMS Sender ID Register. If you don’t, your customers may no longer see your business name when they receive your messages. Instead, they’ll see “Unverified.”

For businesses that rely on SMS to communicate with customers, this small change could have a significant impact on customer trust, engagement and response rates.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is SMS Sender ID Australia?

An SMS Sender ID is the business name displayed instead of a mobile number when someone receives your text message.

For example, instead of receiving a message from:

+61 412 345 678

Your customer might receive it from:

  • Bumper Leads
  • Wilson Accounting
  • Endota Wellness College
  • Your Business Name

Using a branded Sender ID helps customers immediately recognise who is contacting them. This builds trust and makes them more likely to open and respond to your messages.

Businesses commonly use branded Sender IDs for:

  • Appointment reminders
  • Marketing campaigns
  • Customer notifications
  • Order and delivery updates
  • Payment reminders
  • Two-factor authentication (2FA)
  • Customer support messages

Why Are the SMS Sender ID Australia Rules Changing?

Unfortunately, SMS scams have become increasingly common.

Scammers regularly impersonate trusted organisations such as:

  • Banks
  • Government agencies
  • Delivery companies
  • Telecommunications providers
  • Healthcare providers

To combat this growing problem, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has introduced the SMS Sender ID Register.

The goal is simple:

  • Make it much harder for scammers to impersonate legitimate businesses.
  • Help consumers identify genuine messages they can trust.

SMS Sender ID Australia Changes from 1 July 2026

From 1 July 2026:

  • Businesses using branded Sender IDs must register them.
  • Unregistered Sender IDs will no longer display your business name.
  • Customers will instead see “Unverified.”
  • Unverified messages may be grouped together with other unverified SMS messages, including potential scam messages.

For businesses, this means your carefully branded customer communications could suddenly lose the trust you’ve spent years building.

What Happens After 1 July 2026?

There are two possible outcomes.

Scenario 1 — Your Sender ID Isn’t Registered

Your SMS messages may still be delivered, but instead of displaying your business name, recipients will see:

Unverified

Rather than appearing in a dedicated conversation under your business name, your messages may be grouped together with other unverified messages, including potential scam texts.

Imagine receiving these two messages:

Wilson Accounting

Your tax appointment is tomorrow at 10:00am.

vs.

Unverified

Your tax appointment is tomorrow at 10:00am.

Which one would you trust?

Most customers have become much more cautious about SMS scams. Seeing “Unverified” may cause them to ignore, delete or question whether your message is genuine.

Scenario 2 — Your SMS Provider Isn’t Participating

There’s another important consideration.

If your SMS provider or telecommunications provider hasn’t joined the SMS Sender ID Register, branded Sender ID messages may not be delivered at all after 1 July 2026.

That’s why it’s important to not only register your Sender ID but also confirm your SMS provider supports the new requirements.

Who Needs to Register for SMS Sender ID Australia?

You’ll likely need to register if your business sends SMS messages displaying your business name rather than a phone number.

This commonly includes businesses using:

  • ActiveCampaign
  • TouchSMS
  • Twilio
  • MessageMedia
  • ClickSend
  • Sinch
  • CRM platforms with SMS functionality
  • Marketing automation software

If your SMS messages are sent from a standard Australian mobile number rather than a branded Sender ID, these changes generally won’t affect you.

How Do You Register?

The registration process is usually handled through your SMS provider or telecommunications provider.

Generally, you’ll need:

  • Your ABN
  • Registered business details
  • An authorised business contact
  • The Sender ID(s) you wish to use

Each SMS provider has slightly different registration procedures, so contact your provider if you’re unsure where to begin.

Don’t Wait Until the Deadline

Although the changes officially commence on 1 July 2026, registration isn’t always immediate.

Your Sender ID needs to be verified before approval is granted. Leaving registration until the final days could result in your messages being affected while your application is still being processed.

If your business relies on SMS for:

  • Appointment reminders
  • Customer notifications
  • Sales follow-up
  • Marketing campaigns
  • Two-factor authentication
  • Review requests

it’s worth checking your registration status now.

ActiveCampaign and SMS Sender ID Australia

Many Australian businesses use ActiveCampaign together with providers such as TouchSMS, Twilio, MessageMedia or ClickSend.

If your automations send SMS messages using your business name as the sender, now is the time to verify:

  • Your SMS provider participates in the SMS Sender ID Register.
  • Your Sender ID has been successfully registered.
  • Your automations will continue displaying your business name after 1 July.

This simple check could prevent unnecessary confusion for your customers.

Our Recommendation

Don’t wait until customers start seeing “Unverified.”

Take a few minutes to:

✅ Check how your SMS messages are currently sent.

✅ Confirm whether you’re using a branded Sender ID.

✅ Contact your SMS provider.

✅ Register your Sender ID before 1 July.

It’s a small task that helps protect your brand, maintain customer trust and ensure your SMS communications continue working as intended.

If you’re already using ActiveCampaign for marketing automation, now is also a good time to review your SMS setup and ensure everything is ready for the new requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to register if I send SMS from a mobile number?

Generally, no.

The new requirements apply to branded alphanumeric Sender IDs, not standard Australian mobile numbers.

Will my SMS stop working?

Not necessarily.

If your Sender ID isn’t registered, your messages may still be delivered, but recipients will see “Unverified” instead of your business name.

However, if your SMS provider doesn’t support the SMS Sender ID Register, branded messages may not be delivered.

Does this affect marketing SMS?

Yes.

Any SMS sent using your business name—including marketing campaigns, appointment reminders, customer notifications and automated workflows—may require Sender ID registration.

Can I register multiple Sender IDs?

Yes.

Businesses can register multiple legitimate Sender IDs where there is a valid business need.
